Then join us for Writing For Freedom’s first-ever Write-a-Thon—

a two-week celebration of storytelling and collective impact!

Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out, this is your

chance to meet your writing goals and help us bring culturally empowering creative writing programs to girls and young women of color across the South and beyond.

✍️ WHAT IS A WRITE-A-THON?

 

A Write-a-Thon is a peer-to-peer fundraiser for people who believe in the power of writing as liberation.

Writers commit to:

✅ A personal writing goal (word count, number of poems, scenes for a play—whatever inspires you!)

✅ A personal fundraising goal to support WFF’s mission. You’ll invite your community—friends, family, followers—to cheer you on and donate to help you reach your goal. Think of it like a walk-a-thon, but with pens instead of sneakers.

 

It’s simple: You write. Your community donates. Together, we uplift marginalized voices.

 

 

🌱 WHY THIS MATTERS

 

Writing For Freedom is a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating the next generation of storytellers, truth-speakers, and cultural leaders. We provide accessible creative writing programs that support personal transformation, academic success, and narrative reclamation for girls and young women of color.

 

Your Write-a-Thon fundraising directly supports:

📚 HER Society – Our writing + mentorship program for college-age women of color, currently at

UNC Charlotte.

 

🎨 BLERD Chronicles – A creative workshop celebrating storytelling through comics, illustrated narratives and digital art.

 

📝 LIT(eracy) Labs (launching 2026) – Our in-school writing program for high school girls, improving literacy and culminating in youth-led publications and performances.

5. Access your media kit—we’ll send you email, text, and social media templates to spread the word.

6. Write your heart out and share your journey with your supporters!

Next Steps!

If you have signed up for the Write-a-thon directly via Betterworld (the platform used to create your personal Write-a-thon page), PLEASE EMAIL 

sabrina.yvellez@writers4freedom.org to notify her of your participation! This way, you can stay updated during the write-a-thon via email.

 

If you need help with fundraising, this FUNDRAISING KIT contains templates and images you can use to share about the Write-A-Thon to your community. Whether your outreach is via text, email, or social media, these various templates are here to make you feel confident in asking your community for support!

 

Once you create your Write-A-Thon page, Sabrina will email you your personal Write-a-thon page link and QR Code to use for your donation outreach.

Already Signed up? Awesome! You should receive an email from sabrina.yvellez@writers4freedom.org within 24-48 hours of signing up to confirm your participation. Please be sure to check your spam folder. If you do not receive this email, please contact us. You can also find the next steps here:

  1. 1. Build your Personalized Write-a-Thon Page. Click HERE to create your page. Make sure in your “donor appeal” section to include: your writing goal, why writing is important to you, and why you want to support Writing for Freedom. You can use THIS TEMPLATE if you need help creating this section. 

  2. 2. Follow us on Social Platforms: Instagram Facebook Linkedin . We want to root you on during the Write-a-Thon and repost content you tag us in!

  3. 3. Receive your Fundraising Media Kit via email a week before the Write-a-Thon (Or check back on this page). This will provide you with outreach templates to help you feel confident when fundraising.

  4. 4. Invite a friend: Know any friends/writers groups who might be interested in joining? Send them this link or email us so we can send them a personal invite.

  5. 5. Get ready to write! Look at these prompts if you need any inspiration.
